Asclepias verticillata (WHORLED MILKWEED)
bloom Jul-Sept | height 2’ | full-sun
This is a great smudger pant —as in mix it in with a group of two or three species and it will help meld the planting together. It is a milkweed, so it does what milkweed does: feed monarch caterpillars and spread (though not so vigorously that it will take over). The stature and flower are more subtle, but look great mixed into the garden landscape.
Plants that grow well with whorled milkweed: Bouteloua curtipendula (side oats grama), Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower), Asclepias sullivantii (prairie milkweed)
