North Branch Natives
Symphyotrichum oolentangiense (SKY BLUE ASTER) *
bloom Aug-Oct | height 3’ | full-sun to part-shade
This is a taller species aster that, like aromatic aster, tends to bend in the direction of the sun. Plant it in with taller structural plants in groups of one to three for a diverse matrix sure to bring all the bees to your yard. This sky blue aster can also be used toward the back in shorter gardens as an accent grouping. It will reseed, though shouldn't overwhelm a densely planted garden.
The bunnies love asters, so if you have a problem with the adorable little critters, intersperse with plants in the mint (Monarda) and onion (Allium) families, or seed in once your garden is established.
Plants that grow well with SKY BLUE ASTER: Button blazing star (Liatris aspera), Copper-shouldered oval sedge (Carex bicknellii); Side oats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula)
