Carex brevior (PLAINS OVAL SEDGE)

bloom May | height 8' | full-sun to shade
This is an incredibly versatile sedge, able to go from hot sunny roadside conditions to tucked into the shade of a shrub or taller plant. The grass-like foliage greens up early in the season and in the fall takes on ivory tinged tips -just beautiful. This is a favorite NBN plant and a garden must-have. Plant them in larger groupings and layer taller species or those with contrasting texture.

What feeds on Carex brevior? Grasshoppers and leafhoppers, which are then eaten by birds. Small songbirds also feed on the seeds in the spring.

Plants that go well with PLAINS OVAL SEDGE: Bradbury’s monarda (Monarda bradburiana); Showy black-eyed susan (Rudbeckia fulgida var. speciosa)
