North Branch Natives

Eutrochium purpureum (SWEET JOE PYE WEED)

bloom Jul-Sep | height 6-7’ | part-sun to shade

This is a wonderful accent plant for the garden. Whorled leaves unfurling in spring may be one of the most beautiful things about this Joe pye weed, resembling dancers as the stems bend and wind. If you are an admirer of the painting La Dance by Matisse, you will see the likeness. Incredibly striking, let's just say.

The umbel flower forms mid season and offers valuable foraging for a number of insects including long-tongue bees, butterflies, moths and skippers —everyone loves Joe pye.

If you have the room for this elegantly tall statured plant, add it to your garden!

Plants that grow well with sweet Joe pye weed: Sporobolus heterolepis (prairie dropseed), Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower), Monarda fistulosa (bee balm)
