North Branch Natives
PRAIRIE VIOLET (Viola pedatifida)
bloom Apr-Jun | height 6" | full to part-sun
Violets are a great ground cover mixed in with other short species. This violet takes more sun and drier conditions than some of the others and has a beautiful foliage texture.
Every wonder why many of our native spring flowers are in shades of blue-purple? Some of our earliest pollinators (bees) see mostly in these shades plus ultra violet light. It is a beautiful relationship :)
Plants that grow well with prairie violet: Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama), Allium canadense var. Lavendulare (showy wild garlic), Heuchera richardsonii (prairie alumroot)
