North Branch Natives
Penstemon pallidus (PALE BEARDTONGUE)
bloom May-July | height 1’ | full to part-sun
Any Penstemon is great, really, but this one is short and can fit into a garden space that others cannot (Chicago Parkways, for instance). Abundant tubular flowers attract bumblebees and hummingbirds; the foliage matures to shades of dark green and deep purple in winter. Plant it in larger groups of 5-10 for visual impact.
Plants that grow well with pale beardtongue: Eragrostis spectabilis (purple love grass), Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama), Carex brevior (plains oval sedge)
