GOLDEN ALEXANDERS (Zizia aurea) *
bloom May-July | height 2-3’ | full to part-sun
A happy spring flower, Zizia species (along with other plants in the carrot family) are host plants to caterpillars of the black swallowtail butterfly. In rich soil, this plant can grow quite tall (3') and full —possibly overpowering smaller species. Plant it as a single accent plant dotted through your garden or in smaller groups. Reseeds readily.
Shadier spots with poor soil tend to keep this species smaller in size —experiment with placement in your garden to see what looks good to you. Either way, we love it!
Suitable for wet areas.
Plants that grow well with Baptisia: Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower), Asclepias verticillata (whorled milkweed), Heuchera richardsonii (prairie alumroot)
