Schizachyrium scoparium (LITTLE BLUESTEM)

bloom Aug - Oct | height 3' | full to part-sun
An elegant addition to your meadow or prairie garden, little bluestem is a warm season grass that starts out a fresh blue-green in color and matures to tones of pink and orange in fall. It has good structural qualities and adds a nice contrast in the garden.

Plant Schizachyrium in numbers of 1 to 3 or wind them around wildflower species for some additional support. Thinner soil (less organic material and nutrients) generally keeps this plant standing upright, so if you have some crummy soil that you are looking to fill —this may be your guy.

Suitable for wet areas.

Plants that grow well with little bluestem: Liatris ligulistylis (meadow blazing star), Symphyotrichum oolentangiense (sky blue aster), Eutrochium purpureum (sweet joe pye weed)
